Could nitric acid melt your finger off?

I've heard stories of acids, specifically nitric acid, having the ability to melt a person's finger off in a matter of minutes, or even seconds. I realize that there are different concentrations of the acid, some of which could not necessarily melt a person's finger, but could the right concentration actually eat away your finger?
