Are there any regular volunteer opportunities in or near downtown Chicago?

I've been wanting to give back to the community I live in, and meet other like-minded people in the area. I haven't volunteered too much, but I'd like to do it much more. Ideally, I'd like to interact with locals and not just people who work in the area. I like food pantries and other types of things where you get to help people that are in need. If anyone knows a good place, or even a good service that has multiple things to do. It would also be nice if it could be something I could do on and off, depending on how busy I am, rather than being something I need to commit to completely. Thanks!
